Abstraction

Abstraction is not simply defined, this concept brings together different artistic approaches whose purpose is to express themselves through a non-figurative representation of reality. The artist will evoke an emotion, a feeling, an experience from reality, a wonder, a questioning, finally all that can take shape in his being. The work can escape its creator and take its own form, its own expression. Abstract art uses a language of great freedom.
Abstraction has developed for more than a century through different artistic currents: geometric abstraction, abstract expressionism, lyrical abstraction, the informal, tachisme, etc., and many artists who have become famous representatives of it.
Today this movement keeps all its strength, its dynamics and its freshness, and is indeed one of the great contemporary artistic movements. Abstract art, like other forms of artistic expression, is not dissociated from the current context, climate crisis, economic, social crises, and wars. Art is a response to what goes through us but also a way to act by sharing a vision of the world. Abstraction continues its way, deepening its means of expression and its different techniques and materials.
The abstraction section presents a wide range of the different currents of abstraction through the works of solid artists and representative of today’s trends. I hope that you will have as much pleasure to discover all these works as I had to compose this section.

Art naïf

The emergence of naive art and modern primitive art in our civilisation is an attempt to rediscover the hidden energy of nature and a humanity that is gradually disappearing. The Naive artist has an essential mission: to restore meaning to a certain art world that has become greedy and ignorant, and in which intellectual and speculative dishonesty has become increasingly prevalent.
To call the Naive artist as a Sunday painter is, in itself, reductive and restrictive. He or she cannot be just an occasional painter, a dilettante or an amateur.
The naive artist is much more than a “visionary dreamer” who seeks, through artistic creation, to cope with the abrasive pressure of an alienating professional life that destroys his imagination and sensitivity. He is the one who gives hope, he is the one who builds our tomorrow, with the quiet strength of great men and women.
The twenty or so naive, wonderfully human artists on show this year are a fine demonstration of this: elegant giraffes, benevolent elephants, gentle landscapes, peaceful streets, the big eyes of little girls filled with wonder - so many elements that are offered up to our gaze, to make it still possible for us to believe in a brighter tomorrow.

CLAUDINE LOQUEN
President of the Naive Art section

Chromatics

It is with immense pride that I present to you our brand new group: “Chromatics”. As president of this exciting artistic adventure, I am delighted to have been chosen to create and lead this group filled with vibrant colors, unbridled originality and daringly eccentric works that will perhaps lead us to a new artistic movement: Chromatism.
Our section is a veritable whirlwind of creativity where artists as crazy as me mingle, determined to master and express the power of colors. Each of the selected works embodies the very essence of our vision: dynamism, audacity and a hint of artistic madness.
I would like to express my gratitude to the Board of Directors of the Salon d’Automne as well as its president for their confidence in our innovative project. Their valuable support allowed us to bring to fruition this group dedicated to the celebration of the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Finally, a big thank you to the artists who joined this incredible adventure. Their passion and commitment are reflected in each canvas, providing audiences with a unique and captivating visual experience. We invite you to let yourself be captivated by the creative energy of «Chromatics» at the Salon d’Automne. Let yourself be carried away by this fusion of dazzling colors and dazzling ideas, because here, art finds its freedom and its most authentic expression.
Welcome to our flamboyant universe, where the extraordinary mixes with the ordinary to create an unforgettable artistic spectacle.

MICHÈLE ANSERMET PAPADOPOULOS
Head of « Chromatics » group

Expression libre

The Expressionist movement is not strictly pictural. It represents the spirit of a period (beginning of the 20th century).

It is characterized by the will of the artists to create a visual shock with violence, unusualness, or surprise, by the choice of bright and arbitrary colors, translating the look they have at the world in that period.

In that Free Expression group, edition 2023 of the Salon d’Automne, I am particularly happy to show a selection of talented artists.
It is important to encourage the artists so that they are able to create. It is important for them to participate, to exchange, to meet people, to start new projects, new friendship and to have the public verdict.

Some of these artists are really in the expressionist movement, others are more in a free expression. But we are all together in a united and enthusiastic team for our great and historical exhibition.

Figuration

“My business is to draw what I see, not what I know is there”
J.M.W. Turner

Is painting reality today a courageous act, affirming our refusal to submit to the sirens of one-track thinking, who for over a century, have believed they could declare the clinical death of figuration? Figuration has never been so alive.

Once again this year, the artists in the Figuration group are proving this by the diversity of their sensibilities, approaches and talents.

Please come and join us to discover the diversity of their views and compositions, which have a common denominator: painting reality by observing the world around us.

DIDIER THIRION
Head of « Figuration » group

Héritage et Innovation

Lev Tolstoi said: “Beauty will save the world”.

We should however probably say “Goodness will save the World”.
For those who destroy nature are surrounded by beautiful landscapes, and those who order wars are surrounded in their beautiful homes
by beautiful paintings.

Many of the artists in the Heritage and innovation group are altruistic rather than aesthetic external beauty.

Thank you to all the artists for their generous and humanistic messages.

STEFAN BEIU
Head of « Héritage & innovation » group

Imaginaires

The “Imaginaires” group -as its title does not necessarily indicate- is the successor of the Jean Pierre Alaux’s section, prince of Surrealism and Jacques Poirier, Hyperrealism pope. Years go by, names change but the story continues.

“Imaginaires” came from a poem reading in a library, one day after high school. To a host of strange, unknown and surreal things and animals from the depths of the abyss to the surface of the waves.

As it can sometimes be with some of our uncertain dreams that come from the depths of the subconscious to bloom in colors on the surface of the canvas.

Finally, as Picasso would say, “I put everything I love in my paintings. Too bad for things, they just have to work out between them.”

MICHEL DANKNER
Head of « Imaginaires » group

Synthèse

The Synthèse group, between figuration and abstraction, is a synthesis of the different sensitive and poetic currents expressed at the Salon d’Automne.

The display harmonizes and brings together the works in a musical rhythm of alternating calm and accents. To say with lines, shapes, colors... or not to say, only to evoke...

To say with Bernardino Toppi or not to say too much with Nathalie Doré or Akil, that’s not the question. The only thing that matters is emotion, whether or not you enter the canvas: to fly away, to dream, and to give free rein to the imaginary, that’s the raison d’être of painting, of art !

In her book Térébenthine, in 2020, Carole Fives writes:
All the intelligence in the world can do nothing, art is above all a matter of emotion.

Painter of sensitive, Yves Wacheux, painter of poetic and touching landscapes, and for many years a member of the Synthèse group, has just joined the stars.

CATHERINE SÉVÉRAC
Head of « Synthèse » group

Variations

The Salon d’Automne dedicates its new group Variations to the most unclassifiable pictorial works. If painting is undoubtedly the most accessible medium among the artistic disciplines of Fine Arts, the paintings presented in this group share their unpredictability.

Then, suspended moments interact in a complementary way within this section, which are precisely transcribed -as in the L’horizon des évènements of David Twose-, only evoked -as by Colette Klein and his work Hors frontières- or even fragmentary -as Lorna with Cascade.

All the works can then be understood as a puzzling and disjointed narration, to which each artist selected for this 2023-2024 season brings an interpretive lead, a vision... Beyond the established way.

ADÉLIE ARRIDIAUX

Sculpture

“Sculptor”? If you search for this word in the dictionary, you will find as definition “Person who practices the Art of sculpture as a discipline of Fine Arts, in leisure activity or as a profession”.

It reflects the material part only. A sculptor translates our deepest intimacy. They show us their transcription of the world and nature that surround us.

This year we have the honor to receive sculptures of the animal sculptor François Pompon, who are lent by the museum of Saulieu.

In our time, when the planet has lost 70% of its animal species (according to WWF), animal sculptors aware of this loss have mobilized. This year, they represent a third of the exhibited sculptures that testify to the beauty of the wild world and the emotion aroused.

Abstracts and constructivists are also present. The harmonization with the paintings constitutes a homogeneous whole of the art of the 21st century.

Architecture

This year’s Salon d’Automne dedicates its Architecture section to projects by architect Paul Le Quernec. Both completed in 2022, these two projects reflect an instinctive, timeless approach designed to awaken our childlike spirit. He then built a nursery in Fleury-sur- Orne, Normandy, and went beyond our borders with his “Au Grand Air” school project, which saw the light of day in the city of Gurgaon, India. Located next to New Delhi, one of the world’s most polluted cities along with Bombay and Lahore, the project’s name is no coincidence. The photographs presented here bear witness to the fresh air breathed by the building, which stands completely apart from the urban dynamics already in place at the time. Somewhere between a wasteland and a residential area, the project forms a sort of protective bubble, dedicated to the development of its occupants. The building is equipped with an air filtration system, the quality of which
is transmitted in real time to screens inside the structure.
The building’s aesthetics also add a touch of freshness, with “pineapple skin” cladding and an explosion of primary and complementary colors that add dynamism to the façade, breaking away from the flatness of the surrounding tall buildings.
While the playfulness of the exterior reflects the building’s function, the interior is also endowed with this fantastic spirit, with its colorful walls sometimes pierced by aquariums.
By adapting perfectly to environmental and legal constraints, Le Quernec and his team are fulfilling their main objective: to combine the notions of education and fulfillment in their projects -and in everyone’s mind- so that they become one and the same.

Engraving

The exhibition space devoted to engraving at the 120th anniversary of Salon d’Automne generously reflects the many facets of contemporary creation. The artists taking part in this new edition have mastered this ancestral technique, or rather these ancestral techniques, to express their creativity.

Drypoint, aquatint, burin or acid etching, black or colored... the wealth of works presented on the show’s walls will delight art lovers, enabling them to discover or rediscover talented artists who have chosen this means of expression.

Drawing - Water painting

This year, the Salon d’Automne dedicates its Drawing – Watercolour section to various creations, presenting an anthology of styles and techniques specific to contemporary drawing.

For centuries, French culture has continued to classify artistic disciplines. In this way, two categories have emerged throughout history, opposing the major arts, called Fine Arts (which include cinema during the 20th century, renamed the “seventh art”) and the minor arts, including for example ceramics, goldsmithery and jewellery.

Drawing takes time to impose itself in the history of art collections. It is first considered a preparatory work, a necessary task to rise larger projects, rather than a discipline in its own. It gradually gain its ranks of nobility during the Renaissance, finally finding his place in prestigious collections. Thus, from the restricted circle of the great Renaissance masters, the collections of drawings have expanded throughout history to emerging artists, who have get more autonomy.

Today, Drawing occupies a prominent place in contemporary creation, whose artists selected for this 2023-2024 session testify in all their diversity.

Photography

For 120 years the Salon d’Automne has evolved a lot, and photography too.

Once again we have gathered a constellation of talents from all over the world, with 12 different nationalities, offering a breathtaking panorama of creativity and diversity.

This year, we are presenting a very wide technical panorama, ranging from ancient processes (with bichromate gum), to digital cameras, including film. All on multiple media and formats.

The 75 exceptional artists, men and women, including 12 young people, gathered to share with you their unique vision of the world.

Each photography tells a story, captures an emotion, and it is with great joy that we invite you to let yourself be carried away by this wide range of artistic expressions.

Environnemental art

The environmental art section brings together artists who immerse themselves in nature, landscapes, and environmental and ecological issues, a source of beneficial creations that reshape our universe.

In a communion of thoughts, these artists weave a network of ideas and support, blending harmoniously, as art is a powerful means of communication and transformation. They explore various forms of expression, from grand installations to sculpture, photography, video, serigraphy, lithography and performances revealing a propensity to value abandoned, diverted, recycled or reclaimed materials.

Through different approaches, they awaken critical reflections regarding our relationship with the environment. Environmental art also aims to be a bearer of alternatives and saving solutions. Each artist bring their unique vision and intimate style to the collective, weaving a tapestry of unparalleled diversity. The combination of individual talents on display creates a captivating experience at each edition of our Autumn Salon.

As the president of this section, I have the noble task of being a talent facilitator, aware of the messages conveyed by these creations while celebrating cultural diversity. It is our duty to be talent enablers by fostering the connection of ideas and emotions through their works. Here we are a faithful reflection of a society in motion, bearers of heightened consciousness and determination to shape a world in resonance with our environment.

Myths and singularity

Myths and Singularity, in its eighth consecutive year, continues to present its world off the academic track, with that residue of the “precious wildness” of childhood, as Picasso said.

Encapsulating emotion through an instinctive sincerity that expresses itself through unconventional techniques and materials, unconventional, liberating, regressive techniques and materials such as sewn metal, sculpted fabrics, rope knots, scotch tape, collages of all kinds, recycled plastics, recycled wood and other materials, but also sculptures assembled from objects, ceramics... forgotten folk techniques... And of course, its festival of paints and colours for universes that are often distorted...

Unusual works for personal myths, 39 international artists. Another facet of art.

President of the « Myths et Singularity » section

Digital art

“Every work of art is the child of its time (...)”, Vassily Kandinsky.

What a joy it is to celebrate the 120th edition of the Salon d’Automne, 120 years in which all artistic techniques will have been honored, including, already, a fifteenth of digital art! More than a century of art history, including some of the world’s most famous creations in all media, including a short decade of interactive performances, digital pictorial compositions, artificial intelligence, mappings and even holograms!
With the exception of a few stars such as Jason Seiler, the guest artist at the launch of this section, and although some thirty digital artists have received high distinctions, it’s certainly too early to say who will become the «digital Van Dongens» of tomorrow. On the other hand, like Cartier-Bresson, David Hamilton, Dior, Cézanne, Picasso, Debré, Roussel or Vasarely, their reputation, like that of this historic salon, will undoubtedly claim to have been avant-garde 50 years from now!
So let’s give a big thank-you to Sylvie Koechlin and her entire board of directors for daring to shine the spotlight on an art form so little understood in 2015! Let’s also thank all the multi-disciplinary artists for their investment and conviction in digital art: choosing to create with digital tools is a real spirit and commitment!
Many thanks also to all those who have supported me in the creation and development of this fully-fledged section, your trust and respect over 8 years... Together, we have written a wonderful chapter in the history of this institution! May this event brighten the hearts of all our artists and audiences, as it has for the past 120 years, in good times and bad...

Artists' books

LARGE GAP AT BOOK

From silk thread on organza to weathering steel...

Original inks, chalk grease, etchings, embossing, cut-chiselled-folded paper, soft leather, engraved zinc, manuscripts, lead typed texts, pigment print, silkscreening...

Our books –wether one of a kind in volume, in very short print runs in slipcases, boxed or bound in full scalf binding and mother in pearl– bear witness to a technical mastery that combines knowledge with emotions.

21 years of books are shared with the 120th anniversary of the Salon d’Automne, and it’s pure joy.

Amplitude

The “Salon d’Automne” is an international modern art exhibition since 1903. A great number of French and international artists can meet and open up to the world: Japon, Africa, Middle East... The latest edition in 2022 took place in a historical monument : the Grande Halle de la Villette.
We are happy and proud to present the project “Amplitude” which takes us into a world of beauty, traditions and avant-gardism. Selected French artists from the Salon d’Automne are happy to connect with German and Polish artists and we hope that other countries and cultures will join us.
In the name of our president, Gilles Guillaume, and all the artists, I warmly thank Professor Damian Pietrek for his invitation and for the work he did for us, so we could be all together in that beautiful museum in the town of Jaworzno, in Poland.

I also thank Georg Schnitlzer, co-president of BBK Bonn,
for the organisation of the exhibitions in Germany, Siegburg, Kohln, Bonn, and our last exhibition in Paris with the Salon d’Automne 2022.

Dziekuje.

Arbustes

The partnership between the Salon d’Automne society in Paris and the association Beaux Arts Découverte, represented by the artist painter Christiane Ruiz-Jancovic, allows 16 young laureates of the 12th Arbuste salon, an art exhibition dedicated to artists under 30, to present their work in allocated spaces at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, thus promoting their artworks by presenting them to a larger public.

This initiative’s goal is to encourage young creators by allowing them to confront their artworks with those of veteran artists.

Mika Ichikawa

MIKA ICHIKAWA ABOUT HERSELF

As a child, she was looking for calm sea (Seto Inland Sea), and by then there was not yet a big bridge (Seto Ohhashi Bridge opened in april 1988).
Her father and mother ran a small fish shop. At that time, her parents often took her to the “hama”(fresh fish market) and she kept looking for the brightly colored fish on display. She has never forgotten the dazzling glow of the sea and colorful fish from”hama”.
Even now, each landscape has been vivid in her mind forever.

INSPIRED BY THE VICTORY: UKRAINIAN ARTISTS IN TIMES OF WAR

For more than a year and a half, Ukraine has been under severe challenges not only for ourselves but also for the entire world. Particularly for European countries. WWI and WWII and their aftermath, which affected the fates of several generations of almost every European family, revealed a model of changing human worldviews during the war.
It is culture and art that are the fundamental stimulus for the defending the state and the means of ensuring Ukraine’s spiritual defence capability. Along with weapons, they constitute a crucial tandem that attests to the uniqueness of Ukraine’s place in the world and its ability to withstand external influences and intrusions. We believe that light will win! No global catastrophe or tragedy will break humanity’s faith in creative vitality, and art will revive and heal wounds. This idea is the core of the NAA of Ukraine’s exhibition project at the 2023 Le Salon d’Automne anniversary show in Paris.
We express our sincere gratitude to the management of Le Salon d’Automne, under the presidency of Mr. Gilles Guillaume for the chance to be present here. The Academy’s participation in the event of this high level was due to the initiative and support of godmother Lady Dewi Soekarno.
We would like to extend special thanks to the Ukrainian project team in Paris: Natalia Shpytkovska, curator and exhibition manager; Andriy Puchkov, Oles Sanin, Mykhailo Bokotey, Olimpia Cebotari, and Natalia Kochergina.
